The selection process is extremely competitive and assesses not just financial knowledge and analytical ability, but also logical reasoning, persistence, and genuine motivation. Here’s what the past selection process has looked like:
・Document Screening (Resume, Essay, Academic Performance, English Proficiency)
The initial application typically includes an English resume, essay, GPA, and proof of English proficiency (TOEFL/IELTS, etc.). Your documents must clearly convey “Why you are a great fit for Point72.”
What matters most at this stage is your academic record and the consistency of your essay. Your intellectual curiosity, sense of responsibility, and logical thinking as a future investor must come through. If not, you'll likely be cut in the first round.
・Stock Pitch Submission (Mandatory)
Applicants who pass the document screening are required to submit a stock pitch — an in-depth investment analysis report. This is not just a summary of IR materials. You must use professional techniques such as financial modeling and valuation, demonstrating analysis skills equivalent to a junior analyst.
Stock pitches are increasingly common in hedge fund recruitment and are used to evaluate whether you have:

Once your stock pitch is accepted, you will go through several rounds of interviews. The content typically includes:

Additionally, most interviews are conducted entirely in English. Being able to articulate yourself logically in Japanese is not enough — you must be able to communicate fluently in English as a baseline.
・Final Interview (Senior Portfolio Managers)
The last stage is a final interview with either a CIO or senior portfolio manager. By this point, the basic “red flag” checks are over. What matters most now is “fit.” The questions will vary widely, but they often focus on personal traits, team compatibility, and more importantly, “Can you really survive in the high-stakes world of investing?”
For example, one past candidate was asked:
“You could get fired here — and that would make future job hunting extremely difficult. Are you really prepared for that?”
This kind of question is often intended to test your conviction. While the premise is somewhat exaggerated — transitioning from hedge funds is not as difficult as implied — you must not flinch. If you hesitate, even if you’re highly qualified, you may be deemed a poor fit for hedge funds. You need the mindset that you’ll take any risk necessary to reach your long-term goal.
Your basic communication skills and ability to engage in peer-level dialogue, including asking thoughtful questions, will also be evaluated. Many students underestimate the importance of asking smart follow-up questions. Make sure you're fully prepared.
