Goldman Sachs Internship Applications Now Open!
Hello, this is TJ, founder of Alpha Advisors!
Today, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know about preparing for the highly competitive Goldman Sachs short-term internship, one of the most frequently asked-about programs we support.
As you know, Goldman Sachs is widely regarded as the most prestigious financial institution in the world—for many, it’s synonymous with global investment banking. As a result, the internship program receives thousands of applications each year. However, each division typically hires only 1–5 interns, making it one of the most competitive programs globally.
To succeed in such an environment, thorough preparation is essential. Unfortunately, many applicants submit their materials without adequate planning, only to be rejected immediately at the resume or interview stage.
Goldman Sachs’ internship requires excellence across many areas—including your resume (ES), interviews, and technical financial knowledge—so there is no room for guesswork.
That’s why success depends on rigorous, individualized preparation using proven, repeatable strategies.
In this article, we’ll cover the latest information about the Goldman Sachs internship, plus the 7 key preparation steps that successful candidates always follow.
If you’re even slightly interested in applying, don’t wait—book your free consultation now before the deadline!

7 Essential Strategies to Pass the Goldman Sachs Selection Process
The Goldman Sachs short-term internship is known for its extremely high level of competition, with acceptance rates often in the single digits.
Yet each year, many students apply without adequate preparation and are quickly eliminated during the resume or interview stage.
Here, we’ll explain in detail the 7 essential strategies that actual Goldman Sachs interns and full-time offer holders have followed to succeed.
Each of these steps is critical—missing even one could significantly lower your chances of making it through.
① Deep Self-Analysis and Clear Motivation
“Why finance?” “Why Goldman Sachs?” “Why this division?” These are the fundamental questions in every interview—and your authenticity and logical clarity will be revealed in seconds if pressed. You may find sample essays (ES) from past applicants online, but to be blunt, none of them meet the bar required for an offer. We strongly advise you not to rely on such examples.
・Why did you choose finance as a career?
・Why Goldman Sachs over other firms like Bank of America or Morgan Stanley?
・Why Asset Management over IBD? Why Research over Markets?
You need to answer these questions by tying them to your personal experiences, thought processes, and values—creating a logical and convincing narrative. At Alpha Advisors, we support this through deep “Five Whys” analysis and reverse-roleplay from the interviewer's perspective to help you craft a motivation statement that convinces anyone who reads it.
② Understanding the Industry and Division
“Do you actually understand what this job entails?” The work, required skill sets, and evaluation criteria differ greatly between divisions such as IBD, Markets, Asset Management, Research, and Engineering. If you don’t understand what the role involves, you won’t be able to construct a convincing reason for applying—and even if you get the job, it may not be the right fit for you. To avoid this mismatch, Alpha starts with one thing: thorough information gathering and industry research.
③ Precision in Your Essay and Resume
Goldman Sachs expects far more than a simple self-promotion essay. Your documents must demonstrate logical thinking, structural clarity, deep insight, and a sharp, unique perspective—all at once. If your ES ends with just an introduction, if your achievements are listed without revealing your thought process, or if your motivation remains vague—you’ll likely be filtered out in the first screening.
Goldman is known for screening out 80–90% of applicants just from the ES stage. Think of your ES as a sales pitch—a professional, persuasive pitch where you are the product. At Alpha, we help you craft that document with precision.
④ Interview and Case Preparation
Once you reach the interview stage, the focus shifts to evaluating your character, cultural fit, depth of thinking, and maturity. While you'll be asked basic questions like motivations and self-introductions, you'll also face behavioral questions such as: “Your manager is doing something that isn't illegal but is ethically questionable. You're the only one who knows. What do you do?”
On top of that, expect technical finance questions such as interest rate trends, actions by the Bank of Japan or the Fed, or your thoughts on recent M&A deals. Many divisions also conduct interviews in English, and case interviews and current events discussions are common. You cannot prepare for these topics the night before. Goldman’s Super Day involves 6–7 hours of interviews in a single day, and only those with deep preparation will survive. Your maturity will also be assessed through how you communicate—those who still act like students are quickly eliminated.
⑤ Technical Preparation
Having zero financial knowledge is not an excuse. Being a student won’t be an acceptable reason to lack preparation—if you claim interest in finance, you must show it through action. You must be ready to cover the following:
・Valuation methods (DCF, multiples)
・Understanding the links among the three financial statements
・Market fundamentals (equities, bonds, FX, commodities)
Beyond the basics, Goldman Sachs may even ask you to perform simple financial analysis or pitch a stock during the internship. That’s why advanced technical preparation is essential. At Alpha, we provide practical training in financial modeling, corporate analysis, and industry research. Our clients, even those with no prior finance background, have landed offers at Goldman because they undergo this level of training.
⑥ Networking with Employees
Your chances of passing increase dramatically if you have connections with current employees or alumni. At firms like Goldman Sachs, referrals and casual chats often become key decision factors in the screening process.
However, many students don’t know how to build these networks in the first place. With companies becoming more cautious about fairness and compliance, formal networking opportunities are increasingly rare, making it even harder to connect with employees directly.
At Alpha, we guide our clients on how to approach alumni, request informational interviews, and build a strong network. If you’re unsure how to start, we’ll cover everything during personalized coaching sessions.
⑦ Defining Your Long-Term Goal
Among all the preparation strategies, the most critical is having a clear long-term goal.
It’s not enough to say, “I want to work in finance.” You must be able to answer:
“What kind of professional do you want to be 10 years from now?”
“Why is Goldman Sachs the right first step toward that vision?”
Those who land offers at Goldman can clearly articulate their long-term vision and why Goldman is essential to realizing it. In contrast, many applicants simply go after big names and rankings—saying things like “Goldman sounds cool”—and are rejected. At Alpha, we help students move beyond admiration and build a consistent, authentic narrative based on personal experiences, values, and strengths. We then connect that vision to your motivation and self-presentation in a way that resonates with interviewers.
It’s that level of clarity—being able to say, “Goldman Sachs is the best company for achieving my long-term goals”—that enables our clients to win offers, regardless of school background.
4. Want to Win at Job Hunting? Talk to Alpha Advisors First!
At elite financial institutions like Goldman Sachs, securing a spot in the internship program can significantly shape your future career. In fact, in firms like Goldman Sachs and other global investment banks, the short-term internship is directly linked to full-time hiring, and performing well here is the fastest route to a full-time offer.
However, many students apply each year without adequate preparation, only to be instantly rejected at the resume or interview stage. We often see students come to Alpha Advisors after they’ve already failed, realizing too late that they weren’t ready. But at that point, it’s like starting cram school after failing an exam. If you’re serious about winning, consult with a professional before you fail. Recruiting at Goldman Sachs is more competitive than getting into the University of Tokyo—no one succeeds alone.
That’s why you need to reach out to us now. Alpha provides comprehensive support for ES, interviews, technical finance preparation, and internship training to help you land your offer at Goldman Sachs. The internship application deadline is Thursday, June 19—if you want to win, now is the time to contact Alpha!
