Hello, this is TJ, CEO of Alpha Advisors.
Today, I’m excited to share our complete guide to the top Master of Finance programs in Europe. At Alpha Advisors, we’ve helped over 200–300 candidates each year gain admission to world-class graduate schools, including Harvard, Stanford, Chicago Booth, Wharton, Columbia, LBS, Cambridge, and Oxford. Many of our clients also go on to receive job offers from elite firms like Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Google, Amazon, and leading global corporations.
In recent years, we’ve seen a sharp rise in the number of students aiming for top global finance firms like Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, BlackRock, KKR, Citadel, and Point72. We regularly receive inquiries from clients seeking to enter global investment banks, pivot into private equity, or land front-office roles in hedge funds across Europe.
Entry-level offers in these firms often exceed ¥15 million ($100K) in year one—and many professionals go on to earn ¥30–50 million ($200K–$350K) within just 3–5 years. For top-performing traders and quants, $1 million+ annual compensation is well within reach. It’s an industry defined by three key traits: expertise, high income, and global mobility.
Among the most powerful ways to break into this elite sector is the Master of Finance (MFin) degree.
Master of Finance programs offer a rigorous balance of theory and practice, and most European options are one-year full-time programs—making them ideal for those seeking intensive, time-efficient study and cost-effective ROI. If you're looking to break into finance quickly and affordably, this degree is for you.
Another popular graduate path for finance professionals is the Master in Financial Engineering (MFE). While highly respected, MFEs are typically much more technical, requiring strong proficiency in mathematics, programming, and data analytics. As such, they may not be suitable for candidates from non-STEM backgrounds. In contrast, Master of Finance programs are far more accessible to students from liberal arts, business, and economics backgrounds, making them a more practical and effective route for many.
Ultimately, choosing between an MFin and an MFE depends on your profile and goals. However, for those aiming for global finance careers, the following European programs stand out for their world-class placement results and starting salaries:
・University of Oxford – MSc Financial Economics
・HEC Paris – Master in International Finance
・London Business School – Masters in Finance
・University of Cambridge – Master of Finance
・London School of Economics – MSc Finance
These programs consistently place graduates into investment banking divisions (IBD), sales & trading, equity research, quant roles, analyst positions, and private equity firms. If you want to launch a global finance career—especially in London, Europe’s financial hub—this is the pathway for you.
In particular, LBS, Cambridge, and HEC Paris are designed for early-to-mid-career professionals, making them ideal for those seeking to transition into finance from other industries or countries. Many of our clients with no prior finance experience have used these degrees to pivot successfully into investment banking and double or triple their income.
If you're even slightly considering a career in global finance or pursuing a Master of Finance degree, we encourage you to read through this article—and book a free 1-on-1 consultation with Alpha Advisors.
We’re here to help you win admission to top schools and land that elite finance job you’ve been dreaming of. Let’s make it happen together!

Master of Finance in Europe
①University of Oxford – MSc Financial Economics Program Overview
Program Highlights
The MSc Financial Economics (MFE) at the University of Oxford is a rigorous 9-month program designed to provide an in-depth understanding of both the theory and practical applications of financial economics. In addition to core courses in asset pricing, corporate finance, and financial foundations, the program incorporates practical projects and internships to help students develop real-world analytical and decision-making skills.
The program is highly selective and intimate, with approximately 80–90 students per cohort. It is known for its international diversity (about 97% of students are from outside the UK) and gender balance (around 47% women). The average age is around 23, and many students bring roughly one year of prior professional experience.
Oxford also offers a wide range of experiential learning opportunities through initiatives like the Oxford Finance Lab and the Asset Management Masterclass, where students receive mentorship and insights from top professionals and alumni. During the program, students regularly interact with leading firms such as Citi, Morgan Stanley, and Carlyle through workshops and networking events.
Admissions Requirements
Applicants must demonstrate outstanding academic performance, with most admitted students holding a First Class undergraduate degree (or equivalent). While most come from economics, finance, or quantitative disciplines, applicants from the humanities are also considered—strong quantitative and analytical skills are essential.
Submission of a GMAT or GRE score is mandatory, with the average GMAT score around 742. Proof of English proficiency (TOEFL or IELTS) is also required, so early preparation for standardized testing is important.
Professional experience is not required, but most successful applicants have completed internships or gained around one year of practical experience prior to enrolling.
Career Outcomes
Career placement from the Oxford MFE is exceptionally strong. Recent data shows that 92% of graduates secured employment within six months of graduation. Graduates go on to work in top financial centers around the world, with London being the most common destination, followed by Hong Kong and other global hubs.
The majority of graduates enter the financial industry, including investment banking, asset management, hedge funds, and private equity. A smaller proportion transition into consulting. Top employers include:
・Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, UBS, Blackstone (investment banks and private equity funds)
・McKinsey & Company, Bain & Company (strategy consulting)
The average starting salary is approximately £64,000, with those entering finance typically earning over £70,000. This equates to roughly €74,000. Many firms also offer annual performance bonuses, pushing total compensation even higher.
②HEC Paris – Master in International Finance Program Overview
Program Highlights
The Master in International Finance (MIF) at HEC Paris consistently ranks among the top finance programs in the world. It is globally recognized for academic rigor and outstanding career outcomes. The program typically lasts 10 months, with a possible extension to 16 months depending on the student’s background. It offers a comprehensive curriculum covering corporate finance, capital markets, and risk management.
The program is highly selective, with a cohort size of approximately 30–50 students, and around 63% of participants are international. The average age is 23, and the gender ratio is roughly 60:40. Students admitted to the program demonstrate strong academic performance, with a median GMAT score of 710. Most students come from backgrounds in business, economics (74%), or engineering (20%).
The curriculum is divided into two entry tracks based on academic background: the Accelerated Track and the Business Track, each offering tailored foundational courses. Midway through the program, students specialize in either the Capital Markets track or the Corporate Finance track, allowing them to deepen expertise aligned with their career goals.
Career support is a core strength of the program, with initiatives such as the London Study Trip, on-campus corporate presentations and mock interviews, and the prestigious International Finance Forum, providing students with access to top-tier employers and alumni.
A unique feature of the program is the inclusion of “AI & Finance” courses, allowing students to gain cutting-edge skills in financial technology and machine learning.
Admissions Requirements
Professional work experience is not required, although internship experience is highly recommended. Given the program’s competitiveness, academic excellence and strong test scores are essential.
Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree with high academic distinction, and submit GMAT or GRE scores. The median GMAT score of admitted students is approximately 710. Proof of English proficiency (TOEFL or IELTS) is also required.
While applicants come from a variety of fields—including business, economics, and engineering—successful candidates are expected to have a solid foundation in mathematics or statistics and a strong passion for finance. The class size is deliberately small, and the admissions process is extremely selective, drawing exceptional talent from around the world.
Career Outcomes
More than 95% of graduates receive job offers within three months of graduation, with approximately 80% entering the financial services sector, including investment banking, asset management, hedge funds, and private equity.
Typical placement breakdown includes:

③London Business School – Masters in Finance Program Overview
Program Highlights
The Masters in Finance (MiF) at London Business School (LBS) is a full-time, one-year program designed for professionals with prior work experience in finance. The average student has 5–6 years of professional experience and is around 29 years old. With approximately 130–140 students per class, the program is one of the largest among its kind and boasts significant diversity—about 99% of students are from outside the UK, and 30–35% are women.
The MiF curriculum is highly flexible. Students can tailor their learning paths with a broad array of advanced finance electives in areas such as corporate finance, investments, accounting, derivatives, and asset management. Additionally, students can choose a Concentration to focus on a specific area of finance aligned with their career goals.
Practical components such as the Global Immersion (field trips to financial hubs), company-sponsored projects, and internships of up to 16 weeks provide a strong bridge between theory and practice. Being located in London—one of the world’s foremost financial centers—gives students access to a rich professional network and employer opportunities during and after the program.
Admissions Requirements
The LBS MiF requires a minimum of two years of full-time professional experience, with a strong emphasis on relevant experience in finance. Many students have worked in investment banking, asset management, securities, or consulting.
This program is aimed at mid-career professionals seeking to deepen or accelerate their careers in finance. Applicants are expected to have strong academic credentials, and a GMAT or GRE score is required (though no minimum score is specified). Candidates must also demonstrate leadership experience, teamwork, and a clear career vision, as assessed through essays and interviews.
Proof of English proficiency is required, and recommendation letters from current or former employers are a critical part of the application evaluation.
Career Outcomes
Approximately 93% of MiF graduates receive job offers within three months of graduation, and the official placement rate reaches 89% within four months. Roughly 82% enter the financial services industry, securing roles such as investment banking associates, private equity or hedge fund analysts/associates, and portfolio managers at asset management firms.
The remaining 18% go into consulting, tech, or corporate finance roles at multinational companies.
Geographically, about 51% of graduates remain in the UK, while others take up roles across continental Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
Top hiring firms include:
・Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Barclays, HSBC
・Carlyle, Warburg Pincus (Private Equity)
・McKinsey & Company, Bain & Company (Consulting)
・Leading fintech and Big Tech companies
Most graduates are hired into mid-level roles that reflect their prior experience—e.g., associate-level positions in investment banking or analyst roles in PE. The average starting salary is around £80,500, which converts to approximately €93,000. In London, base salaries around £60,000 (€70,000) are typical, with total compensation often exceeding £100,000 (€110,000+) when bonuses are included.
④University of Cambridge – Master of Finance Program Overview
Program Highlights
The Master of Finance (MFin) at the University of Cambridge is a 12-month, full-time program specifically designed for professionals with prior finance experience. The first 9 months are dedicated to core coursework, and the final 3 months focus on an individual project. Required courses include corporate finance, capital markets, and investment management, along with a wide selection of electives that allow for curriculum customization based on career goals.
The program strongly emphasizes applied, experiential learning, including:
・Equity Research Project (real-world equity analysis)
・Group Consulting Project (tackling live business challenges with corporate partners)
Additional offerings such as international study trips and the City Speaker Series connect students directly with finance industry leaders. Each cohort includes 80–90 students, with an average age of 29 and an average of 6 years of professional experience. Around 40% are women, and students come from 25+ countries. Most students come from finance-related fields, including investment banking, asset management, hedge funds, and audit/FAS roles, creating a classroom rich in real-world financial expertise.
Admissions Requirements
The Cambridge MFin requires a minimum of two years of full-time experience in the finance industry. Direct progression from undergraduate study is not allowed. In practice, most students have 5–6 years of experience. Applicants must hold a strong bachelor's degree equivalent to a UK 2:1 or higher, and although GMAT/GRE scores are optional, submitting one may strengthen the application, particularly for borderline cases.
This makes Cambridge one of the few top European finance programs that do not require GMAT/GRE, ideal for candidates looking to minimize standardized testing.
English language proficiency (TOEFL or IELTS) is mandatory, and three letters of recommendation are required. The selection process emphasizes professional achievements, leadership skills, and clarity of career goals. Even without a GMAT score, candidates with strong professional track records and finance acumen are highly competitive.
Career Outcomes
The Cambridge MFin is particularly strong for candidates looking to transition within or step up in the finance industry. Many students are promoted into associate-level or more senior roles after graduation. Approximately 75% secure employment within four months of graduating.
Graduates go on to work globally, with job placements across Europe, Asia, and North America. The most common destinations include:
・Investment banking (M&A and markets divisions)
・Investment funds (private equity, hedge funds, venture capital)
・Asset management firms, financial consultancies, fintech companies
Cambridge Judge Business School is internationally known for its strong career services, which include career coaching, employer events, and networking support. The average starting salary is approximately £85,000 (about €98,000). In London, associate-level roles in investment banking often offer base salaries around £85,000, with total compensation—including bonuses—frequently exceeding £100,000+.
Notably, over 90% of graduates achieve a “triple jump” in job function, industry, and/or geography—making this one of the most impactful finance programs globally for career transformation.

While professional experience is not required, applicants must use their essays to articulate their career goals in finance and demonstrate relevant exposure such as internships or extracurriculars. As with top-tier schools, academic strength alone is not enough—clarity of purpose and long-term vision are also heavily weighted.
Career Outcomes
LSE MSc Finance graduates have a strong track record of entering top global financial institutions, particularly in London. For the Class of 2023, 91% received job offers within three months, and the final placement rate reached 97% within six months.
