Harvard Business School (HBS) has produced the most unicorn founders, with 70 companies to its credit. Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB) is in second place with 38 companies, followed by the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania with 28 companies.
According to VCI's research, the top 11 business schools have a rate of 1.65 unicorn founders per 1,000 students. This is a hundred times higher than the rate of 0.02 unicorn founders per 1,000 students at other business schools in the U.S.
Among the top 11 business schools, GSB has the highest rate of unicorn founders with 4.2 per 1,000 students, followed by HBS with 2.9 and MIT Sloan School of Management with 2.2.
According to the VCI study, about 30% of unicorn founders attended or worked at universities outside of the United States. Tel Aviv University has produced 43 unicorn founders, making it the foreign university with the most unicorn founders.
Oxford University, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Cambridge University, and the University of Waterloo follow in the ranks from fifth to ninth.
These research findings suggest that it is possible to found a unicorn even without an MBA. However, founders with an MBA have been shown to raise more VC funds and are more likely to succeed.
